For Fear of the Jews

What they do, why they do it, and how to make them stop.

I once asked a Catholic priest what the Church was doing to save the civilization it claims to have created. The question sparked a long, interesting, and expansive conversation. At one point, the conversation touched on the controversy that had erupted over the 2019 confrontation between white Covington (KY) Catholic High School students and Nathan Philips, an Omaha, in Washington, DC. Oh, yes, said Fr. Javier. I was in Rome at the time and we heard about it over there.

I said I thought it was a disgrace how the bishop for that diocese rushed to denounce those kids that very evening.¹ Even had the facts not later exonerated the students, the bishop should not have attacked them publicly as he did. “That just shows that the bishop was more concerned with pleasing the New York Times than pleasing God,” I said. Fr. Javier agreed it had not been handled well.

10th Bishop of Covington, Roger Joseph Foys “We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C.,” the January 19 statement read. “We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.”

Later in the conversation, the word “Jew” entered it for the first time. It was like tossing a snake into the middle of a hatchery. The elderly priest physically reacted to it. His eyes grew wide and fearful. The tone of the conversation changed immediately and it was brought quickly to a close. It was obvious the priest hoped I would leave and not come back.

Incidentally, the answer to my original question about what the Church was doing to save the civilization it claims as its own: “prayer” (i.e., nothing). As for what I said that so frightened Fr. Javier: “Jews run Hollywood” (i.e., truth).²

Fear, as an aspect of Christianity’s response to the Jew, has a very lengthy pedigree—all the way back to Year One, Day Three. Here’s how John 20:19 describes the first appearance by Jesus to his disciples after the resurrection: “Jesus came and stood among the disciples on the evening of the first day of the week, when they were gathered behind locked doors for fear of the Jews.”

This odd illustration of a blow-dried and feathered Jesus showing the hole in his hands to his disciples is meant to be a depiction of the events described in the 20th chapter of the New Testament Book of John. The disciples don’t look very fearful. Perhaps Jesus has lightened the mood with some of that Jewish humor: So, I just flew in from the right hand of God and, boy, are my hands holy!

Christian Century describes itself as “a progressive, independent religious magazine devoted to helping people think critically and live the Christian faith thoughtfully.” “Since 1900,” reads the masthead, “the Christian Century has published reporting, commentary, poetry, and essays on the role of faith in a pluralistic society.”³

In a 2020 article titled, “For fear of the Jews?” Christian Century contributor and co-vicar at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Diego, Laurel Mathewson, took issue with the way the Gospel of John portrays that first appearance by Jesus to his disciples. “It can be tricky, to say the least,” she writes, “to navigate the historical breadth of anti-Semitism spawned by New Testament language and simultaneously address contemporary vestiges of anti-Jewish prejudices still present, festering, in our congregations.”

I’m not sure what Laurel Mathewson is even talking about here, but for faithless toadying, she ranks with Bishop Foys.

Laurel explains how “embarrassing” this Gospel story is by pointing out that the disciples were Jews, themselves, and, duh! how could Jews fear Jews? It’s an “obvious rhetorical absurdity,” she writes. I hope no one points out to her that this antisemitic text was written by someone identifying as a Jew and how could Jews hate Jews? She might have a crisis of faith.

Laurel Mathewson is so terrified she or her church will be thought non-progressive that her solution to the problematic verse in the Gospel of John is simply to replace the word “Jew” with something else. If they really want to please the New York Times, they should change the Bible so that the disciples were behind locked doors for fear of white supremacy.

“Maybe…everyone you know is concerned about the recent rise of anti-Semitism around the world, as you are,” Laurel Mathewson concludes. “Your church might be hungry for renewed understanding of how to proclaim Jesus as Lord…without reinforcing legacies of hate that they truly want no part of.”

How about that, Anglicans? Legacies of hate, no less.

Here’s a Baptist church off Gallery Pl in DC advertising a political slogan, as if to say, “We have nothing of religious value to offer.”

But, fear of the Jews didn’t start with the birth of Christianity. In the Old Testament book, Joshua, for example, the main character, Joshua, [from

] “the titular Hebrew warlord who succeeded Moses in leading the chosen people to their promised land, where they deceived, robbed, raped, enslaved, killed, defamed, and or entirely erased from history all the people who were not Semitic,” is going from town to town in Palestine with a mob of 40,000⁴ Jews killing⁵ everyone they come across and (usually) stealing all their stuff.

One day, Joshua was having a hard time deciding which city to slaughter next, so he sent two young Jewish guys to go spy out the town of Jericho. As it turned out, the best place to gather intelligence in Jericho was at the house of a local prostitute named Rahab,⁶ so that’s where the two Jewish spies stayed.

The king of Jericho got wind of the two Israelites in town and what they were up to and ordered Rahab to send them into the street. Rahab disobeyed, hiding the two Jews under some flax on the roof and telling the king that they’d already left town. Why don’t the men of Jericho go look for them, suggested Rahab. The men of Jericho, instead of searching Rahab’s house to determine for themselves whether the spies were there, obeyed the woman and left the city to look for the two foreigners. Rahab, turning her back on the men of Jericho she’d sent away, went to the bedroom of the foreign men. While there, she divulged some important information.

And she said unto the men, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.⁷ For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God⁸ in heaven above, and in earth beneath.⁹

When the spies returned to Joshua, they said to him regarding Jericho, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”¹⁰

In exchange for not informing on them, the prostitute, Rahab, and her relatives were spared when the Jews “devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.”¹¹ Rahab and her relatives then dwelt among the Jews.¹²

We also see this debilitating fear of the Jews evident in Russia in the years preceding the systematic mass murder of 66 million Russian Christians. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn writes in 200 Years Together:

…Russian society firmly…forbade itself and forbade anyone to show any trace of a shadow of criticism of the conduct of each Jew in particular…the whole mass of middle‐class civil servants…were trembling at the idea of sounding like “non‐progressives…”¹³

Father Javier, Bishop Foys, and Vicar Mathewson—three individuals whose titles identify them formally as Christians—tremble at the idea of sounding non-progressive.¹⁴ In the name of progressivism, the Church has abandoned our civilization, as Fr. Javier admitted, our people, as Bishop Foys demonstrated, and our religion, as Vicar Mathewson explained.

To the extent Christians are progressive, they are paralyzed by fear no less than the people of Jericho were. But, where the people of Jericho feared genocide, Father Javier, Bishop Foys, and Vicar Mathewson and all the woke progressives fear name-calling. To the extent the culture—a kind of reflection of religion—is progressive, the same debilitating fear, to the same degree, renders the larger culture as crippled by irrational fear as the religion.

Supremacy theology: “For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee.” Deuteronomy 15:6

The author of Henry Ford’s The International Jew, the World’s Foremost Problem, writes:

The note which everyone observes in politics, as in the Press, is the fear of the Jews. This fear is such that nowhere are the Jews discussed as are, say, the Armenians, the Germans, the Russians, or the Hindoos. What is this fear but reflection of the knowledge of the Jews' power and their ruthlessness in the use of it?…

It is very significant that those who most assume to represent the Jews are quite content that the fear should exist. They wish it to exist. To keep it delicately poised and always there, though not too obtrusively, is an art they practice. But once the balance is threatened, their crudeness instantly appears. Then comes the threat, by which it is hoped to re-establish the fear again. When the threat fails, there comes the wail of anti-Semitism….

Now, a great service is done when the people are emancipated from this fear. It is the process of emancipation that Jewish publicists attack. It is this they call anti-Semitism….

The process involves several steps. The extent of the Jewish power must be shown. To this, of course, strong Jewish objection is made, though no strong disproof can be made.

… [T]he existence of this power…can be explained only by…the deliberate program which is followed in the attainment of the power. When the method is explained, half the damage is undone.

…the deliberate program to instill the fear through which we are ruled…

The Jew is not a superman. He is bright, he is intense, his philosophy of material things leaves him free to do many things from which his neighbor draws back; but, given equal advantages, he is not a superman.

Then, referring to the Bolshevik Revolution, he continues, citing a Famous 19th Century Forgery We Must Ignore:

It has demonstrated its power to the world. Protocol Seven says: “To demonstrate our enslavement of the Gentile governments of Europe, we will show our power to one of them by crimes of violence, that is, a reign of terror.” Has Europe been sufficiently “shown”? Europe has, and is afraid!

And there you have the explanation for the otherwise puzzling openness with which Israel currently is exterminating the Palestinian people. Israel is teaching the whole world to fear the Jews.

We are all Jericho, now, with a single brilliant and courageous exception.

My personal theory is that they are the numerical equivalents of secret handshakes. If the New York Times, for example, reports a rash of 40 pogroms breaking out in Texas, the “40” acts as a kind of wink wink to its Jewish readers.

5. The Hebrew word used throughout translates literally to something like “consecrated to God,” but has the meaning of total annihilation.

6. The Old Testament word for “gentile” is “enemy” except in the third person, singular, feminine gender, when it’s “prostitute.” Btw, wasn’t there a prostitute on The Wire named “Rehab?”

Somehow, 4th Century Christians were convinced to enthrone this bloodthirsty wilderness, slaughter god, promoting it to Ruler of the Universe, and then attaching Jesus, with his message to love our neighbors, subordinately, at its “right hand.” It’s almost as insane as the blood-guzzling US Congress, as it rains terror down on Gaza (as Rahab put it), labelling the people they are bombing in their own houses in their own towns “terrorists.” Hey, no thanks, Tom Cotton, you stupid, ignorant, gullible, murderous, duped Judeo-Christian! I’d rather hang with the Antisemites. You Judeo-Christians are too ugly and evil and you stink of the blood of children.

8. It is advisable to keep in mind that priests wrote this stuff. Also, it was the priests who brought down the walls of Jericho by fiercely blowing on trumpets. Haha.

14. The other major branch of Western Christianity—the evangelical, fundamentalist, Christian Zionist branch—also rejects factual truth when it comes to Jews, but in that case the underlying emotion motivating the rejection is reverence, leaving them too confused and ignorant to fear the Jews.
